Camp focus: G5 university application preparation/ study skills/ subject exploration.

Camp focus: UK Prep School bridging skills, holistic development and academic enhancement. 

 

8. STEM & innovation camp, Harrow Shenzhen (7-11, 14-18 July)

Note: depending on your role, you will be required to start up to 1-2 days before the camp start date to receive training and help set up the programme. Departure times on the final day may also differ between programmes.

INSTRUCTOR
(Academic)

Programme Instructor -Academic

Avernus Education is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated team of Programme Instructors for our summer residential camps and programmes. As a Programme Instructor you will be key to the successful delivery of our summer courses, leading our course workshops and the academic programme, contributing to evening activities and any excursions, as well as playing an essential role in student welfare and the overall smooth running of the residential camp.

Responsibilities: Programme Instructor Academic

  • Teach workshop classroom lessons as per the advertised timetable

  • Design and deliver lessons in your subject (or related fields) including engaging, challenging and interactive sessions and workshops which align with the objectives of the programme

  • Provide pastoral care and support to camp attendees aged 8-15

  • Lead and supervise a range of activities, including innovative lessons and creative workshops, ensuring they are engaging and age-appropriate

  • Attend evening activities to support the Activities and Sports teams in the delivery of the programme

  • Help students settle into the programme and make the most of the opportunities that the programme presents

  • Collaborate with fellow staff members to maintain a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for all students

  • Demonstrate initiative and reliability in daily tasks and unexpected situations

  • Participate in the holistic delivery of the camp, embracing the residential setting and the duties associated with this ‘boarding’ environment

  • Undertake training sessions and adhere to camp guidelines and policies

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in teaching/tutoring, sports, or related fields

  • A PGCE with QTS (or other formal qualification) is desirable, though not essential 

  • Confidence tutoring various subjects and conducting educational activities, such as games and workshops, alongside promoting English as a foreign language.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; native English speaker with the ability to speak Cantonese or Mandarin desirable

  • Ability to take initiative

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently when required

  • Flexibility and adaptability to a dynamic camp environment including early starts and evening bedtime routine duties

  • Readiness for any extra tasks we may need fulfilled. 

  • Good time management skills

INSTRUCTOR
(Activities & Sports)

Programme Instructor-
Activities & Sports

Our team of fun and approachable Activities and Sports Instructors provide the energy and expertise that hold our residential programmes together. As an Activities and Sports Programme Instructor, you will ensure the planning, preparation, and delivery of a range of enriching activities and exciting team building challenges. This role ranges from leading afternoon activities and sports, arranging inclusive and fun evening activities, and taking the lead in off-campus excursions. We are looking for outgoing, friendly and responsible individuals who are comfortable talking on this high energy and fast paced role, essential for the successful delivery of our holistic social and cultural programmes on the camp.

Responsibilities: Programme Instructor Activities & Sports

  • Organise, prepare and lead on extracurricular activities and organise evening social events

  • Provide support, information and guidance to participants, ensuring they are aware of the programme schedule and participating accordingly 

  • Aim to create a ‘home away from home’ and act as both a responsible adult, and a friendly point of contact throughout the programme

  • Be on-site each day providing pastoral and logistic support to participants and members of staff 

  • Assist the Course Manager with site set up, including classroom preparation, resource creation, cleaning and tidying as required 

  • Attend evening meetings with the Course Manager, followed by curfew patrols 

  • Be the face of Avernus Education to students, staff and parents and uphold our high standards of quality, safety and educational excellence 

  • Ensure the programme operates within health & safety and risk assessment guidelines 

  • Assist with other duties around the summer programme as required 

  • Build rapport with students, set correct behaviour expectations and ensure swift response to any welfare or safeguarding issues

  • Take on pastoral responsibilities and evening duties 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Relevant experience of residential summer schools or similar camps and programmes

  • Relevant experience in sports coaching, outdoor pursuits, musical events or performing arts

  • Experience in working with children or young people

  • Candidates with a formal qualification such as a Degree or PGCE are encouraged to apply, although this is not mandatory

  • Have a passion and energy for the programme

  • Be an effective team member, taking on leadership where needed

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; 

  • Fluent English Speaker with the ability to speak Mandarin and Cantonese desirable

PROGRAMME
FACILITATOR

Programme Facilitator 

The Programme Facilitator is expected to contribute to all aspects of the course. Programme Facilitators are responsible for assisting the running of the programme as TA’s (teaching assistants) where required in the delivering of workshop lessons and other course activities, following the advertised content and working with other Programme Instructors to ensure a cohesive delivery of the camp. Programme Facilitators, along with other staff members, may be on a rota for other organisation and logistical aspects of the camp, and when on duty, they are responsible for any ‘down time’ such as lunches, snack times and evening residential routines.

Responsibilities: Programme Facilitator

  • Assist in the smooth operations of all camp areas

  • Support workshop classroom lessons as per the advertised timetable

  • Oversee the sign-in and sign-out of any students

  • Provide pastoral care and logistical support to camp attendees aged 8-14

  • Facilitate and help lead or supervise a range of activities, including innovative lessons and creative workshops, ensuring they are engaging and age-appropriate

  • Help students settle into the programme and make the most of the opportunities that the programme presents

  • Collaborate with fellow staff members to maintain a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for all students, placing safeguarding as a priority 

  • Demonstrate initiative and reliability in daily tasks and unexpected situations

  • Participate in the holistic delivery of the camp, embracing the campus setting and any duties associated with this international school environment

  • Undertake any training sessions and adhere to camp guidelines and policies

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in logistics, teaching/tutoring, sports coaching, or related fields

  • Confidence tutoring various subjects and conducting educational activities, such as games and workshops

COURSE 
MANAGER

Course Manager

Avernus Education is seeking ambitious and capable Course Managers to lead and deliver our residential courses smoothly and successfully. The Course Manager has overall responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of our students, the effective leadership of the staff team, and the coordination of the entire residential programme. 

We are looking for motivated team leaders who are passionate about working with young people, alongside a natural talent for organisation and logistics. As Course Manager you will oversee the running of the programme, leading a team of Programme Instructors and Programme Facilitators as they deliver the programme each day. Alongside academic sessions and workshops, participants also enjoy a busy schedule of social and cultural events, some of which are organised and run by your team under your leadership. The number of students under your care will vary according to the campus and programme; it will be between 20-120 at any given time. Typically the ratio of staff to students is 1:10. You will be the primary point of contact and representative of Avernus Education for parents, students and staff for the duration of the course. 

Responsibilities: Course Manager

  • Provide direction and clear leadership to the team on the camp, including participating in any training (provided by Avernus), and supervising site setup and pack down

  • Place safeguarding and student wellbeing at the core of your practices

  • Oversee the day to day running of the programme, ensuring that the timetable is followed and organised activities are ready to proceed as planned

  • Maintain accurate records of staff and student attendance throughout the programme

  • Communicate efficiently and effectively with Avernus Education senior staff regarding progress of the camp

  • Act as primary point of contact and lead within the camp for parents, students and staff

  • Build and maintain good rapport and working relationships with the Avernus Education team, and external staff, understanding that you are representing Avernus Education, a professional organisation, in this context 

  • Manage any day to day expenses and sundry purchases, keeping accurate records and adhering to a budget 

  • Manage appropriate staff rotas, ensuring an effective team approach and assigning responsibilities as necessary

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A PGSE with QTS (or equivalent qualification)

  • Relevant experience of leadership in an educational programme, summer school or a similar role such as House Parent in a boarding school 

  • Experience working with children or young people ideally in a residential setting 

  • Detailed knowledge of the context of the camp and programme

  • Experience in leading, teaching and providing pastoral care for international students 

  • Experience leading and motivating teams

  • A desire to promote the highest levels of safeguarding 

Personal Qualities

  • Ability to create a positive, supportive environment in which students and the camp tutors are encouraged to perform to the best of their ability 

  • Ability to motivate, encourage and bring enthusiasm to a team while maintaining appropriate professional distance 

  • Excellent communication, time management and prioritisation skills. 

  • Highly organised, efficient and flexible, and able to work in a busy and fast-paced summer camp environment 

  • Adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humour, patience and resilience

  • Be self-motivated to achieve the highest standards in all things, particularly with regards to the quality of experience participants receive
