Explore Engineering Programme
At Oxford University

Our Explore Engineering programme in Oxford provides participants with a fascinating insight into the broad range of topics encompassed by engineering. During the course, students will have the opportunity to explore different engineering topics and put their theories to practice with various hands-on challenges.

Students will learn the fundamentals of physics and mathematics that underpin engineering and gain a new perspective of them based on engineering. They will be taught structures, electronics and fluid dynamics. Students will be expected to work on a project with their tutor during the summer course. They will design with a given goal in mind, then build, test and improve the finished product. Below is a sample of the different modules that are delivered throughout the two week programme to all participants.

Engineering Programme Overview

Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering

  • Introduction to Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering: Acquire basic concepts of mechanical and aeronautical engineering

  • Fluid dynamics: Learn about the flow of fluids - liquids and gases. Explore Bernoulli’s Principle and apply it to real-life examples such as aircraft wings and hydraulic machines.

  • Build an engine: Learn about various types of engines. Design, build and test your own engine.

  • How to become a mechanical and aeronautical engineer? Learn the steps to become an engineer and the career opportunities of engineering. Meet a young engineer professional and learn from their success.

Civil Engineering

  • Introduction to Civil Engineering: Acquire basic concepts of civil engineering

  • What makes a building stable? Learn how to design buildings that can withstand different types of loads, weather conditions and natural disasters. Explore the basics of seismology. Design, build and test your own earthquake resistant building.

  • 3D and isometric drawing: Learn how to draw different 3D objects by hands and using AutoCAD. Put your design and drawing skills to test in our engineering design challenges

  • Studying engineering at university? Learn what it is like to study engineering at degree level. Discover the steps to successfully apply to a range of engineering based university degrees. Meet a current engineering undergraduate and learn from their success.

Electrical and Electronic Engineering

  • Introduction to Electrical, Electronic Engineering: Acquire basic concepts of electrical, electronic engineering

  • Explore semiconductors: Take a dive into silicon and learn about n-type and p-type semiconductors. Explore electrical components such as diode, transistors and solar cells

  • Analog and digital circuits: Learn the difference between analog and digital circuits. Write a program to control electrical circuits.

  • How to become an electrical and electronic engineer? Learn the steps to become an engineer and the career opportunities of engineering. Discover alternative pathways to engineering and explore different related subject areas and degrees.
